EDF Energy announce the first price increases for gas and electricity customers

Today has seen the first energy supplier to raise its gas and electricity prices as much anticipated by many analysts. EDF Energy announced 17% increase for electricity customers and 22% for gas customers. This means the average customers bill will go up by £142 a year on gas and electricity bills by £59 a year.
They are likely to be the first of all the big six energy suppliers to increase their gas and electricity prices as a result of the rising wholesale cost of energy.
Richard George Director of www.saveonyourbills.co.uk said âwe have seen the first big supplier to raise prices but not un-expected. Our advise is to cap your prices now. Take a capped tariff until 2009 or 2010 will mean you pay 7 to 9% more than the cheapest deal in the market but if this goes up by 22% you will loose out in the long term so cap now before these deals disappearâ
While the prices in the energy market have been moving up, Energywatch questions whether the level of some of these increases are entirely justified.
