Questions and Answers about the Business Energy Market

The following questions and answers have been complied to help you answer any questions you may have.
Q. Why should I change my energy supplier?
A. You can change your energy supplier to reduce the amount you have to pay for the gas and electricity you use. This means generally making a saving. You can also change your energy suppler if you are unhappy with the service you are getting from your current supplier.
Q. How can different suppliers from around the UK supply me?
A. Since the energy markets deregulated in the late 1990's all a supplier needs to supply you is your meter number and an agreement in place. They can then apply to supply you from the date agreed. No wires or pipes need to be changed as a general rule. For more details see details on the UK energy market.
Q. What's involved in changing your supplier?
A. Simply find a new supplier via Saveonyourbills.co.uk, complete the application form to change to them. We send your details to the new supplier who then contacts you to arrange the supply. They will "register" you as being supplied with them from a date in the agreement. They will also contact your current supplier but we advise you also contact them to give notice.
Q. Who will read my meter?
A. In many cases it will be the same company or meter operator that currently reads your meter. If you are a heavy gas or electricity user then it may be worth checking in the quotation who this will be.
Q. How long does it take to change your supplier?
A. It can take a minimum of 14 days for electricity and up to 36 days for gas. This is if you are not in a contract. If you are in a contract please allow these time scales when searching around for new prices. We can provide you with quotes up to 3 or 4 months before your contract is due to expire so you should have plenty of time.
Q. Do I have to notify my current supplier that I am changing?
A. Yes, write to them and give them notice. If you miss the notice period they may keep you for another year or may put you on out of contract rates.
Q. Why is the electricity meter number or "mpan" important to obtain a price?
A. The meter number or mpan number found on your bill tells us exactly the type or "profile" user you are. Example it can tell us if you are a day, night or evening weekend user. We can then search all the prices on offer to find the best one for you.
Q. Why is the meter point reference number important?
A. The gas meter point number will allow us to contact Transco to check you exact consumption for the past year. This consumption or "AQ" will then lets us choose the best gas rate we can find for you. Gas rates tend to vary by consumption, getting cheaper the more you use.
Q. Why is the contract start date important?
A. The prices we receive are updated on a weekly basis. The contract start date will allow us to quote using prices that are valid ONLY for the date your contract is due to start. If you tells us a contract start date that is before your contract expires then you may encounter problems changing supplier. If you tell us a contract date after your contract expires then you may have to pay out of contract rates.
Q. Who are the suppliers Saveonyourbills.co.uk uses?
A. Saveonyourbills.co.uk works with just about all of the UK's major energy suppliers and some smaller independent suppliers as well to give you the a full range of choices when it comes to sourcing your energy supply. For more details please see our suppliers pages.
Q. Why do you need electronic data for half hourly customers?
A. If your electricity meter starts with "00" it means you are a half hourly customer. This means you have meter readings taken every half an hour. To allow us to quote on these we need to get a number of details including your half hourly data. We then send this on to the different suppliers to tender for your supply. They will use the data to graph your usage profiles to provide the most competitive quotes. All half hourly and large gas quotes are normally only held open for the day we receive them so please let us know a day when you will be available to make a decision and we can get the prices to you.
